Kansas State University announces its December graduates. Commencement ceremonies were Dec. 11 and Dec. 12.

Lawrence High and Central Junior High schools earned the first and second place trophies, in the K-12 section, and West Junior High School finished first in the K-9 section of the Christ the King Chess Tournament Feb. 27 in Topeka. Cordley also took second in K-3, while Quail Run finished third in K-6. LHS’s Roy Wedge, West’s Aaron Simon, and Langston Hughes’ Shrivatsa Malladi were individual champions in K-12, K-9 and K-3, respectively.

Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, announces Lawrence students named to the honor list in the 2009 fall semester.

David Long and Leah Williams were named to the honor list, by earning a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.

Kristina Haima, Topeka, and Craig Shatswell, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Landon Hein Shatswell, on March 1, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Landon has a brother, Alex Hein Shatswell, 12; and two sisters, Abigale Asiu Shatswell, 5, and Kali Mei Ling Shatswell, 4.

His maternal grandparents are Linda Haima, Ozawkie, and the late Don Haima; his paternal grandparents are Charlie and Amy McGonigle, Topeka.

His great-grandparents are Melvin and Charlotte Bone, Lawrence; Luis Willis, Ozawkie; and Modena Wise, Tonganoxie.

Sara Fevurly, Lawrence, was named to the president’s honor roll for the fall 2009 semester at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, by earning a grade-point average of 4.0.

Fevurly is a 2009 graduate of Lawrence High School.

Mark Jongman-Sereno, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2009 fall semester at Iowa State University in Ames, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Jongman-Sereno is a pre-architecture major at the university.

Rockhurst University announces area students named to its dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Shannon Wanna, Lawrence, received a bachelor’s degree in business administration during the Dec. 19 winter commencement ceremony at Creighton University in Omaha.

Thirty-one beginning educators from around the state have been named 2010 Kansas Horizon Award recipients. The award recognizes exemplary first-year educators and is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education. The recipients were honored at a luncheon Feb. 26 during the Kansas Exemplary Educator Network (KEEN) State Education Conference.

Area recipients are: Andrew Bricker of Lawrence High School and Tara Wycoff of Lexington Trails Middle School in De Soto.

Janet Dehnert, Lawrence, earned a master’s degree in leadership from Bellevue University in Omaha during winter commencement ceremonies Jan. 30.

Rebecca Marquez, Lawrence, earned a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology in Dec. 18 commencement ceremonies at the University of Iowa.

Justine Ahle, Lawrence, was named to the president’s list, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

Matthew Farrier, Timothy Stuart and Peter Zemansky, all of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s list, by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Southwestern College, Winfield, announces students named to the dean’s honor roll for the fall 2009 semester, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.7. Area students are: Alyssa Peterson and Sarah Rommelfanger, Baldwin City; Elizabeth Bellinger, Oskaloosa; and Elizabeth Higbee, Tonganoxie.

Ashleigh Pitts, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2009 fall semester at the University of Delaware, Newark, by earning a grade-point average of 3.33 or above.

Pitts is a senior art conservation major at the university.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers will present a recital at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Art Center. Darci Rodecap, Perry, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rodecap is the daughter of Larry Rodecap and Denise Pickens.
