Vehicle, other items reported stolen

March 2, 2010

A 34-year-old Lawrence man reported Sunday burglary and the theft of a vehicle and other items.

According to police reports, the vehicle, a guitar amplifier and other miscellaneous items were taken from the 1100 block of West 27th Terrace between 8 p.m. Saturday and 7:45 a.m. Sunday.

Assuming that is sarcasm, what is the LPD supposed to do--stake out your yard? I sympathize with you for your loss, but don't understand why it's the police dept's fault. Are there any other things you and your neighbors could do to look out for your own interests and keep an eye on each others' properties? Yes, it's frustrating to have to be that vigilant, but blame the cowardly thieves, not the police. They have an entire city to patrol--they can't camp in your yard on the off chance that thieves will strike the same place twice (how often does that happen?).

As an aside, maybe the LJW can explain something that I've always wondered. What possible reason can you give for listing the age of the victim in cases such as this? Is the victim's age remotely relevant? If the theft had been committed against someone in his 20s or 50s or 80s would it make a material difference to anyone reading the article? Knowing that some people (especially our elders) are sensitive about their age (or just don't want nosy neighbors or coworkers to learn what it is while reading an article in which they know who the victim was), it seems to me that this is insult added to injury... An unnecessary breach of privacy following an already unsettling loss. Comments? Any good reasons for this policy?

Just wanted to clarify, It was on the 1900 block of Barker Ave. and the items stolen were tools. This is the second time in less than 6 weeks. Many of my neighbors have said that they are too missing items but did not report. The first time the thieves got about 2,500.00 in tools, the second only about 500.00. Only because I had not been able to replenish the stolen items. Way to go LPD! Thanks for all your help.
