25 years ago: Enrollments decreasing across Big Eight

For most schools in the Big Eight conference, all the dire projections were coming true. Enrollments, affectd by demographics and the economy, were decreasing. and full-time equivalent enrollment figures, used by some state legislatures to determine university funding, mirrored the enrollment slumps at several Big Eight schools. Of the league universities surveyed by the Journal-World recently, only Kansas Unviersity and Iowa State University continued to defy demographics and other factors to achieve total headcount and FTE increases. KU’s spring enrollment set a record with 25,437. Iowa State had a comparable increase.

Officials of Dillon Stores division of Dillon Co. Inc., announced a new 52,000- to 55,000-square-foot “superstore” would be built northeast of the intersection of Sixth Street and Lawrence Avenue.
