’Huge’ is a big fat snore

Reality television has long felt like a vicarious vacation. “Survivor” has long offered a summer-camp fantasy to the couch-bound, a long game of capture-the-flag, with soap opera politicking thrown in. The new drama “Huge” (8 p.m., Family) is not a reality show. But it feels like one and that’s just one of its disappointments.

“Huge” follows troubled teens at a summer “fat camp.” Nikki Blonsky (“Hairspray”) stars as Willamena, or Will, the camp smart-mouth who brags to the chief counselor Dr. Rand (Gina Torres) that she has made peace with her weight and that she and her fat are “BFFs.”

There’s a remarkable shortage of something we used to call “dialogue” — that stuff in a script that helps you understand characters and their motivations. “Huge” is a glum, slow-moving little show and a vicarious vacation few of us will want to share. No wonder Will is always trying to get thrown out.
