40 years ago: New sales taxes kick in

Certain items not previously subject to Kansas sales tax were scheduled to be taxed at the rate of three cents per dollar beginning July 1, 1970. Some of the affected goods and services were newspaper subscriptions, laundry and dry-cleaning, car washing, bowling, golfing, and car repair. The cigarette tax was scheduled to increase from 8 to 11 cents per pack.

Two of seven teenagers riding in the bed of a truck were injured when the vehicle overturned on a road curve located at East 19th and Harper. The 16-year-old driver told the officer that the 1941 model truck had overturned because all the passengers had been sitting on one side in the truck bed.

Headquarters, then referred to as the “local center for teen drug problems,” was reported to have moved to a larger house at 1124 Miss. from its previous location at 1546 Mass.
