25 years ago: Car chase follows attemped use of stolen credit card

Seven Topeka culture growers filed a $13.3 million lawsuit against Culture Farms Inc. and its president. The lawsuit alleged that the growers were defrauded by the Lawrence firm and four other companies. The plaintiffs were being represented by three Topeka lawyers, including Marge Phelps, who said that the lawsuit also alleged that Culture Farms and other defendants are involved in a Ponzi scheme. Ms. Phelps anticipated that other plaintiffs might join in the lawsuit. Several growers claimed that they had not been paid for cultures since late April or early May.

After attempting to use a stolen credit card at Western Auto on 23rd Street, two Kansas City area men led local police on a car chase through Lawrence that caused four non-injury accidents. The car chase eventually ended near 10th and Indiana Streets and the men were arrested for reckless driving, attempting to elude police and leaving the scene of an accident, with other charges pending.
