Boston’s Pedroia on DL

San Francisco — The Boston Red Sox are going to have to find a way to win without Dustin Pedroia, their most reliable hitter of late. Perhaps for a while.

The All-Star second baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a broken left foot and it’s unclear how long he might be sidelined or whether he could need surgery. He said inserting a pin into the foot is an option to help him heal more quickly, but Pedroia will know more after he is examined by team doctors back home on Monday.

“In the past I’ve healed pretty quick,” Pedroia said. “I hope I do the same this time.”

Zambrano to bullpen after return

Chicago — Carlos Zambrano no longer has a spot in the Chicago Cubs’ rotation after a wild outburst in the dugout that led to an indefinite suspension from the team.

Assistant general manager Randy Bush says he’s not sure how long the suspension will be, that the Cubs sent a letter to the league on Friday and were awaiting feedback on how to proceed.

Manager Lou Piniella says he expects the volatile pitcher to return at some point after a blow-up with Derrek Lee on Friday that put his future with the team in doubt. Piniella, speaking before Saturday’s game, says Zambrano will pitch out of the bullpen when he returns, and the move is “not short-term, that’s for sure.” Former Kansas University pitcher Tom Gorzelanny will take his spot in the rotation.

Source: GM/president leaving Nets

East Rutherford, N.J. — Rod Thorn is stepping down as president and general manager of the New Jersey Nets.

A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Saturday that the 69-year-old Thorn will resign next month. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not authorized public comment.

Thorn would not confirm the move Saturday in a text message to the AP. It remains unclear whether he will remain with the team in another capacity.

Wooden remembered at memorial

Los Angeles — John Wooden was remembered Saturday for being “one in a billion as a coach, mentor and friend” during a memorial service uniting the decades of “boys” who helped him win a record 10 national championships at UCLA.

A sepia-toned photo of the man who answered to the simple moniker of “Coach” rested on one end of a stage inside Pauley Pavilion, where Wooden plied his trade on the basketball court.

The 10 gold-and-blue banners representing each of his NCAA titles were spotlighted in the rafters.

“His spirit will be a part of this building forever,” said broadcaster Al Michaels, who opened and closed the public service attended by 4,000.
