40 years ago: Pilot, passenger injured after plane crash near Vinland School

The pilot and sole passenger of a J5A Piper airplane were injured when their craft crashed near the Vinland School, about nine miles southeast of Lawrence. Their injuries were reported to be not serious.

The Wolf family of 1107 Avalon were finally able to launch their homemade houseboat on Perry Lake. Mr. Art Wolf, president of Centron Corp., said that he had sometimes lacked spare time to finish the project, which was started in January of 1968. By dint of perseverance, he finished the interior in time for the family to enjoy a summer on the lake.

An area resident reported that his apartment had been entered and 30 pictures of nudes stolen. A .25 caliber automatic pistol was also missing, he said.

A debutante ball in Kansas City, held on the south grounds of the Nelson Gallery, was crashed by a crowd of 150 to 200 “casually-dressed members of Kansas City’s hippie colony.” The uninvited guests yelled obscenities and tossed bottles and lighted firecrackers at the police officers who blocked their access to the event. Eight canisters of tear gas were finally used to break up the mob. There were no injuries and no arrests.
