25 years ago: Decision on moving 9th graders to high school delayed
After hearing from some of the nearly 60 people that attended a recent meeting, the Lawrence school board opted to delay decisions on moving ninth-graders to the high school and expanding Deerfield School. However, the board approved a plan to begin shopping for land west of the city for a junior and senior high school. They also voted unanimously to keep sixth grade in grade schools and not move it to junior high.
City Commissioner Howard Hill distributed a letter to fellow commissioners, asking for a study session to discuss “fundamental questions” about the proposed southern bypass. In addition to some funding issues, he questioned whether 31st Street was the best place for a bypass and whether the project should be so planned that an eastside bypass could be added.
A Lawrence man was in the process of seeking a conditional use permit to set up a “para-port” at a site near Clinton Lake, but several neighbors predicted noise problems with the proposed use.
