Omaha, Neb. — Matt Purke did it a different way. The result was the same.
The undefeated freshman won his nation-leading and school-record 16th game Friday, combining with Tyler Lockwood to hold UCLA to four singles in a 6-2 victory that kept the Horned Frogs alive at the College World Series.
TCU (54-13) forced a second Bracket 1 title game against UCLA (50-15) today, with the winner going to the best-of-three finals beginning Monday.

South Carolina downs Clemson
Omaha, Neb. — Michael Roth pitched a three-hitter in his first start in 14 months, and South Carolina scored in five of the first six innings to beat Clemson, 5-1, on Friday night and force a second Bracket 2 final at the College World Series.
South Carolina (51-16) and Clemson (45-24) meet again today, with the winner advancing to the best-of-three championship on Monday.

Valentine to Florida not done deal
Miami — Bobby Valentine still may be coming to the Florida Marlins, though just not as quickly as first envisioned.
A person familiar with the Marlins’ managerial search said Friday that a scheduled interview with Valentine has been put on hold, yet he remains a top candidate for the job.
Royals sign No. 1 pick
Kansas City, Mo. — Less than three weeks after the Royals made him the fourth overall pick in the draft, shortstop Christian Colon signed a contract and got ready to report to the advanced Class A affiliate in Wilmington, Del., of the Carolina League.
A person with direct knowledge of the negotiations said the 21-year-old Colon received a signing bonus of $2.75 million.
Judge backs off delay of hearing
Fort Worth, Texas — A federal bankruptcy judge said Friday that a decision on the Texas Rangers’ plan to repay creditors and sell the team will not be delayed after all, though he warned that the club’s haste could jeopardize the plan’s approval. At a brief hearing, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge D. Michael Lynn granted the proposed buyers’ request for a July 9 hearing, as originally planned.

LeBron to meet with Nets, others
Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is reportedly planning to invite a few teams to meet him over the first three days of free agency, according to a Yahoo! Sports report on Friday night.
The report said the New Jersey Nets would make the first presentation on July 1 in the Akron, Ohio area. The other teams to present: the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Bradley to miss 6-8 weeks
Boston — Celtics general manager Danny Ainge says top draft pick Avery Bradley of the University of Texas will have a “scope” on his left ankle and be sidelined 6-to-8 weeks.
Nets trade Douglas-Roberts
East Rutherford, N.J. — The New Jersey Nets traded guard Chris Douglas-Roberts to the Milwaukee Bucks for a second-round draft pick in 2012, as announced on Friday.

Red-hot Rose fires 62
Cromwell, Conn. — Justin Rose shot an 8-under 62, birdieing five consecutive back-nine holes for the second straight round, to take a four-stroke lead over Kevin Sutherland on Friday in the Travelers Championship. Rose broke the tournament record for the first 36 holes, finishing at 14-under 126.

Pittsford, N.Y. — Cristie Kerr shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to take a five-stroke lead at 10 under on the Locust Hill Country Club course at the LPGA Championship.

Lawyer: Vick not involved in shooting
Virginia Beach, Va. — Michael Vick was not involved or present when a shooting took place outside a nightclub where he had celebrated his birthday, his lawyer said Friday.
Larry Woodward, one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback’s attorneys in his federal dogfighting case, said Vick wasn’t at the club when the shooting took place just after 2 a.m. Friday outside the club Guadalajara at Town Center shopping center.
