25 years ago: Wheat harvest underway

At a recent meeting, the Lawrence School District board had decided to phase in schools with three classes at each grade level. Additionally, they had voted to delay any decisions on building new schools until board members and administrators were to choose which grade schools would grow larger.

In other school-board news, U.S.D. 497 rejected an offer from a Lenexa developer for a 10-acre tract in west Lawrence. Instead, the board hoped to have the tract rezoned from single-family to multi-family housing, as it would be worth more with the new zoning. Some property owners bordering the tract objected to the proposed rezoning.

Two Douglas County officials met privately with Mayor Mike Amyx and City manager Buford Watson to discuss sharing the cost of a proposed southern traffic bypass around Lawrence.

The Kansas wheat harvest was about one-third complete as of the start of the week, making it one of the earliest harvests on record.
