100 years ago: Lights on Massachusetts Street lit

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 25, 1910:

“Precisely at 8:30 last night the man at the switch at the power house of the Lawrence Railway and Light Co. turned on the current that gave light to every one of the 80 candle power Tungsten lights strung at intervals for four blocks along the chief business street of the city. Immediately Massachusetts was ablaze with light. Those who had seen other White Ways in neighboring towns were not disappointed in the effect produced here. The scores of incandescents made the street almost as light as day. It was an easy matter to recognize friends across the street or even half a block away. Those who remember the dark street of a few weeks ago are delighted with the improvement. The crowds strolled slowly along the walks hailing friends and everywhere commenting on the gala appearance of the streets. The picture show did a capacity business and half the soda fountains were drained dry by ten o’clock.”
