In conducting this investigation into child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Kansas, the Journal-World and 6News:

• Used past media accounts, court records and interviews with victims, lawyers and advocates to compile a list of Catholic clergy in the state accused of abuse.

• Contacted each of the four dioceses in the state, as well as representatives from Catholic orders, and requested information about cases, such as the number of allegations made against clergy, number of substantiated cases, as well as the names of those clergy who had been removed from the church or against whom independent review boards had substantiated cases of abuse.

• In addition to e-mail and telephone communication, sent a certified letter to the bishops of each diocese asking for the above information.

• In cases where accused clergy could be located, numerous attempts were made to reach them for comment.
