Nadal tumbles, then cruises to 3-set victory

? Rafael Nadal, who at one point took a nasty-looking spill, composed himself and swept Kei Nishikori, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, in a first-round Wimbledon match Tuesday at the All England Club.

Britain’s andy murray boots the ball in frustration during Tuesday’s first-round Wimbledon match against Jan Hajek. Murray won, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2.

It was merely a coincidence, of course, that Nadal’s third-set tumble Tuesday left him in nearly the same position, and in the same spot, that he found himself the last time he played a match at Wimbledon, almost two full years ago. Except on that occasion, he was dropping to the grass on purpose to celebrate beating Roger Federer in the 2008 final.

Nadal didn’t defend that championship, withdrawing last year because of painful tendinitis in his knees. Now he’s reinstated at No. 1 in the rankings, once again the reigning French Open champion — and back on what he called “probably the most beautiful and emblematic court in the world.”

Said Nadal: “I’m happy to be here again.”

Another past Wimbledon winner coming off an injury, Maria Sharapova, also played Tuesday, and also won convincingly, eliminating 127th-ranked Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia 6-1, 6-0 in only 54 minutes.

Joining her in the second round were defending champion Serena Williams, who pounded 15 aces in a 6-0, 6-4 victory over 17-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal to improve to 43-0 in first-round Grand Slam matches; two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, who overcame 16 aces by Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4; and No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 7 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 9 Li Na and No. 10 Flavia Pennetta.

Men’s winners included No. 4 Andy Murray, two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling, No. 9 David Ferrer, No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and No. 18 Sam Querrey of Santa Monica, Calif.

South Carolina sinks Sun Devils

Omaha, Neb. — Jackie Bradley and Adrian Morales homered during an eight-run second inning that propelled South Carolina to an 11-4 victory over No. 1 national seed Arizona State on Tuesday, knocking the Sun Devils out of the College World Series.

The Gamecocks (49-16) play either Oklahoma or Clemson on Thursday in an elimination game. Those teams started a Bracket 2 winners’ game Tuesday but it was suspended after a 32-minute weather delay with Clemson leading 6-1 in the top of the sixth. The game was to resume at 3:30 p.m., today.

South Carolina starter Sam Dyson (6-5) allowed two runs through seven innings, then was relieved by Matt Price after allowing two runs in the eighth. Whit Merrifield went 3-for-5 with his 13th homer.

Clemson starter Scott Weismann allowed a run, three hits and two walks over five innings. OU’s Bobby Shore allowed three baserunners over the first three innings, before throwing 14 straight balls to start the fourth. Spencer Kieboom’s two-run hit put the Tigers up 4-1.
