The extreme heat and high humidity across our area has led the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for parts of northeast Kansas until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the weather service, temperatures will climb into the mid 90s and heat indices will hit 105 to 110 degrees. The hottest times of day will be between 2 and 7 p.m., but temperatures will be slow to fall through the late evening hours.

Prolonged exposure to high heat indices can lead to rapid dehydration, heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. The weather service urges anyone who must be outside to take precautions, including limiting your exposure and your physical activity. You're also urged to drink lots of fluid to replenish those that are lost.

The heat advisory covers the following counties and includes Lawrence, Emporia and Ottawa:

  • Douglas
  • Lyon
  • Osage
  • Franklin
  • Coffey
  • Anderson

A heat advisory for the following counties will expire at 9 p.m. Tuesday and includes Manhattan, Abilene, Junction City and Topeka:

  • Riley
  • Pottawatomie
  • Jackson
  • Jefferson
  • Dickinson
  • Geary
  • Morris
  • Wabunsee
  • Shawnee

How many heat "indices" can there be? As far as I know, there is only one heat index, which will vary depending on temperature and humidity. Would we say the humidities today will be between 70% and 90%? Is it because "indices" is fun to say?

    1. jkealing (Jonathan Kealing) replies

The heat index is the temperature adjusted by the humidity. So while you wouldn't say humidities, you would say temperatures. Same principle.

I wouldn't say temperatures. The temperature today will range from 88 to 95. Now if I were comparing conditions in two locations, I might go to the plural, but there is only one temperature and one heat index at any given time and place. But indices is fun to say.

I think Alf has a good point with this one....

the Dog Days workout should be fun this afternoon.

That's what Dog Days is all about, right? :) The humidity makes me feel like I'm swimming so maybe I'll get twice the workout.

There is only one Day at any given time and place. Dog Days should not be plural, but it is fun to say.

        Hey, I didn't name it.
However, thanks for the grammer ... er, grammar ... lesson.
