25 years ago: Storms cause power outages
A severe thunderstorm swept through Lawrence, with lightning strikes that caused several power outages and heavy rainfall that filled area streets, stalling some vehicles. Other parts of Kansas suffered more damage from that line of storms, including the Potawatomie Indian Reservation just west of Mayetta, where a tornado took the roof and steeple off the Potawatomie Methodist Church, and Milford Lake near Junction City, where another twister touched down. Winds between 60 and 70 mph swept across the Osage City and Burlingame areas, blowing campers over in the Melvern Lake area.
Plans for two new facilities were officially announced at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Environmental engineering firm Hall-Kimbrell, whose plans had been previously reported, was seeking $950,000 in industrial revenue bonds to build a 7,000-square-foot building for offices and a laboratory. A partnership headed by Bob Billings revealed their plans for an “incubator” facility to house new and expanding industries.
