100 years ago: Bridge suggested near Massachusetts Street

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 22, 1910:

“An Enthusiastic Meeting Held — Members of the Lawrence Committee Discuss Important Matters, Predict Great Things for Lawrence. Among other things the matter of a new cement bridge large enough and strong enough for all purposes. It is probable that the new bridge will cross the river more nearly in line with Massachusetts street than at present…. At the meeting of the Humane Society last night, the question of more humane treatment of horses during the hot weather was considered. Many complaints have come to the society relative to the lack of consideration shown teams. A circular letter will be sent to all large owners of horses asking that their employees be requested to give the animals better care…. ‘I don’t see why I can’t get home when I get drunk,’ sorrowfully remarked a drunk in police court this morning. ‘Other fellows always seem to have a friend around to lead them off the streets.’ ‘Perhaps you are never exactly in a condition to recognize a friend,’ tactfully interposed Judge Menger.”
