Summer hair: Braids, bows and bunny ears

Kate Bosworth arrives to the InStyle/Warner Bros. party following the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 17 in Beverly Hills, Calif.

If haircuts or color feel too drastic for a new summer hairdo, try styling your hair in a simple but different way. Long-lost hair accessories, braids and slick, wet hair make resurgences in summer 2010.

Braids:

Both side braids and plaited braids (fish plaits) were popular on spring 2010 runways, and this trend continues into summer as a prevalent street style around the globe. This natural, gorgeous hairstyle is easy and perfect for hot summer days, especially when the added humidity makes it impossible to tame unruly fly-aways and natural waves. Don’t worry about loose layers or top fringe that won’t stay put within the braid. This summer’s braid is all about relaxed, natural hair that doesn’t stay strictly in one place. Make sure to part your hair on the side opposite the side braid for the most stylish, balanced finish. See Missoni and Alexander Wang Spring 2010 for examples. Also, check out Miu Miu for an even messier version of the side-braid, worn by fans Nicole Richie and Kate Bosworth.

Side-slicked hair:

If you have short hair or a pixie cut, the side-slicked hairstyle is a different look for summer. The look is a bit masculine, accompanying the influx of menswear-inspired items like boyfriend jeans, boyfriend blazers and suit vests; depending on your face structure and the overall look that you desire, adjust your part to a comfortable, natural position. To achieve the correct “slicked” style, look for a gel hair product (a pomade is too thick and will give you a completely different texture). Also, if you’re not into the whole side-part, try slicking your hair straight back– see Roberto Cavalli and Thakoon Spring 2010 for similar straight-slicked styles.

Hair accessories:

Bunny ears:

Although models for Louis Vuitton have been rocking bunny ears on the runway since 2009, this hair trend is hard to pull off. If you do decide that you have the confidence to wear a bunny-ear hairpiece or headband in public, wear it with more sophisticated pieces. An overly girly outfit will make the whole thing look ridiculous, not at all high-fashion. For outfit examples, check out Louis Vuitton Fall 2009/2010.

Headbands and hair bows:

For a much more wearable look, try a hair bow. Hair bows can be worn in both long and short hair. (In fact, I think they look adorable on girls with a pixie cut). Also, instead of everyday fabrics, like cotton, use a silk or leather fabrics for an elegant look. To wear headbands or hair bows as an adult woman, finding the right fabric, pattern and color are key — if not, your officemates will all think you’ve been sifting through your daughter’s mini-vanity for her backstock of pink, green and white polka-dot hair ties. Try out a dark red, green or black silk hair bow (or pair a simple, bow-less black headband with an easy updo).
