Johnson first thanks to ruling

? A NASCAR ruling cost Marcos Ambrose his first career Sprint Cup Series victory Sunday when he stalled his car under a late caution at Infineon Raceway and was forced to forfeit his lead to Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson went on to win his first career Cup race on a road course, ending a 10-week drought for the four-time defending series champ.

Ambrose, who led 35 laps, settled for sixth after coughing up another chance at a victory.

NASCAR pioneer Parks dies at 96

Atlanta — Raymond Parks, owner of NASCAR’s first championship-winning car and an integral part of the series’ formation, has died. He was 96.

NASCAR said Parks passed away at his home Sunday morning in Atlanta. Parks, who was confined to a wheelchair, attended a reception May 20 for the induction of the inaugural Hall of Fame class and was warmly received throughout the industry that evening.

“It was good for the industry and so many current fans to see the man in person,” NASCAR president Mike Helton said at Infineon Raceway, site of Sunday’s race. Helton called Parks “the heart and soul or the spirit that got NASCAR started.”

Tony Kanaan wins Iowa 250

Newton, Iowa — Tony Kanaan overtook Helio Castroneves with 10 laps left and held on to win the Iowa 250 on Sunday.

It was the first win since 2008 for Kanaan, who last won in Richmond. Kanaan had crashed in each of his first three starts at Iowa, but he zipped past Castroneves on lap 240 and cruised to victory by four seconds.

Castroneves finished second, and E.J. Viso was a career-best third. Penske teammates Ryan Briscoe and Will Power rounded out the top five. Danica Patrick finished 10th.

Force earns 130th NHRA victory

Bristol, Tenn. — John Force regained the points lead with his NHRA-record 130th career win at the 10th annual Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway on Sunday.

The other winners at the 12th race in the 23-race season were Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock).

Miyazato tops at LPGA ShopRite

Galloway Township, N.J. — Japan’s Ai Miyazato shot a 7-under 64 Sunday to win the $1.5 million ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The 25-year-old Miyazato is guaranteed to take over the No. 1 spot in Monday’s rankings after her fourth victory of the season.

Second-round leader M.J. Hur finished second, two shots behind Miyazato. Fellow South Korean Inbee Park, the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open champion, was a further two shots back.

Kirk snags Fort Smith Classic

Fort Smith, Ark. — Chris Kirk shot a 6-under 64 in the final round to win the Fort Smith Classic on Sunday.

Kirk finished with a 16-under 264 at the 6,783-yard Hardscrabble Country Club course. He saved par on each of his final three holes to win his first tournament as a professional and take over the top spot on the Nationwide Tour’s money list. He also secured his spot on the PGA Tour next year.

Arkansan John Daly (69) finished 22nd at 8 under in his first Nationwide event since 1991.

Asian takes British amateur title

Muirfield, Scotland — South Korea’s Jin Jeong became the first Asian player to win the British Amateur Championship in the competition’s 125-year history.

The 20-year-old Jeong, who plays for Australia’s Waverley Golf Club, beat James Byrne of Scotland, 5 and 4, in a 36-hole final.

He secured a place in next month’s British Open at St. Andrews and an invitation to the 2011 Masters. Jeong is the second Korean amateur to earn a place at St. Andrews, joining Eric Chun, who qualified earlier this year.

Grizzlies GM signs extension

Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace has signed a multiyear contract extension that gives the team continuity among its leadership.

Neither the Grizzlies nor Wallace would discuss the contract’s length or financial terms. The team also signed coach Lionel Hollins to a three-year contract in April.

OSU recruit in critical condition

Columbus, Ohio — Police say an Ohio State football recruit remains in critical condition a day after he was shot multiple times and a teenage girl was killed in Youngstown.

Police say they have a suspect in Saturday’s shooting of Jamel Turner but no arrest has been made. Authorities declined to provide additional information Sunday.

Turner, a defensive end, signed with the Buckeyes in February. Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel issued a statement saying that he’s praying for Turner. University spokeswoman Shelly Poe said the school had no further comment Sunday.
