Two Fort Riley brigades heading home after serving in Iraq

June 18, 2010

— Two infantry battalions are heading home to Fort Riley next week from a year of service in Iraq.

The units are from the 1st Infantry Division's 4th Brigade. They'll arrive in groups over several days.

Army officials don't release exact arrival times for security reasons and because flights from the Middle East are unpredictable.

Returning are the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry and the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

The soldiers have been deployed in Samara and Tuz. They've been advising and assisting the Iraqi army and returning bases to the Iraqi government as U.S. forces prepare to reduce their presence.

Welcome home gentlemen (and ladies?), as always, things have changed while you were gone. New songs on the radio, new shows on TV, new sayings in popular culture, people are wearing weird new fashions. It's quite an adjustment. Try to avoid the impulse to run out and buy that motorcycle or new car you've been dreaming of for the last year. And don't try to explain things that happened over there to civilians, because no matter how much time you spend on it they won't understand.

Marines say "OohRah," the Army says "HooAh."

Picky, picky I know. Headline states 2 brigades, while story talks of 2 battalions.

Regardless, welcome home troops. Good job.
