Lawrence man arrested on multiple charges of child rape and sodomy

A Lawrence man who was arrested late Tuesday night on charges of committing multiple sex crimes against two children is expected in court this afternoon.

The 29-year-old suspect was booked into Douglas County Jail on two counts of rape of a child, three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, indecent liberties with a child and sexual exploitation of a child under 14. No bond has been set for the suspect.

Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said officers were called to a Lawrence residence about 5 p.m. Tuesday after a relative of the suspect found a DVD that appeared to contain child pornography. Hadl said that after an extensive investigation, police determined the suspect was responsible for inappropriate acts with children. The man was then located and arrested.

The Lawrence Journal-World spoke with the mother of the suspect who said eight children often visited the house and she had felt her home was a safe place to play.

“They loved spending the night. There was no clue that they were unhappy, that there was a problem; they never mentioned it,” she said.

She said the situation has been disturbing to the entire family.

“He’s my son and I love him but … how dare he,” she said.

Lawrence police Sgt. Bill Cory said Wednesday that the investigation is ongoing and no further information about the case would be released.

The Journal-World does not name suspects in sex crimes unless there is a conviction.
