Parkinson, others set to dedicate rebuilt stretch of U.S. 59 south of Lawrence

June 15, 2010

— Kansas transportation officials, Gov. Mark Parkinson and dozens of local leaders will reopen a new stretch of road between Ottawa and Lawrence.

The event Wednesday along U.S. 59 marks the completion of the first phase of the expansion of the highway that connects the two cities and spans two northeast Kansas counties. The road is being expanded to four lanes, with smoother curves and improved sight lines for drivers.

Construction crews have completed the first section from Ottawa north to the Douglas-Franklin county line. The remaining sections will extend from the county line to the southern limits of Lawrence.

The stretch of U.S. 59 had been among the most dangerous in the state with several accidents and fatalities in recent years.

And plenty of room for the Franklin country drivers to speed like crazy while not endangering the rest of us as much! Love it!!

Modern highways do hurt businesses. Highways used to connect towns; now they bypass them. 59 is not unique in this. It began with the interstate system, but is now how other highway "improvements" are done, too. I guess we just have to consider it progress. Convenience always comes at a price.

I like driving through Ottawa. It's a very nice town. I used to have a girlfriend there. You can see the flood gates on the river in case of high water. Nice DQ. The town square. The small shops. I love it.

There is a Southbound slip ramp just prior to the Northbound flyover that heads south into Ottawa. It isn't marked very well yet and I missed it the first time and took the old detour route. It's quite easy to miss.

Last time I drove down that way (couple weeks ago), Old 59 traffic was instructed to take K-68 into Ottawa.
