25 years ago: Survey reveals habits about drinking, driving

Professor John Lastovicka, associate professor at KU, released the results of a recent survey in which 700 young males were interviewed about their drinking and driving habits. Roughly 25 percent of the respondents admitted to driving after at least five drinks, and 45 percent had gotten behind the wheel after three to four drinks. (The study focused on males because nationwide figures indicated they outnumbered female drunk drivers 9 to 1.) Lastovicka said that the results confirmed his belief that current advertising was not dissuading young men from drinking and driving.

Lawrence School District 497 had received only one bid for a ten-acre field near Harvard and Randall Roads. Although the neighbors had expressed their preference for single-family homes in the area, the bid had come from a Lenexa company that wanted the site only on the condition that it could be rezoned for multi-family housing.
