25 years ago: Firefighters, city reach agreement after 9-hour mediation
Hall-Kimbrell Services Inc. was seeking $950,000 in industrial revenue bonds for construction of a building near West 15th Street and Wakarusa Drive. The firm, which was located at 946 Tennessee, specialized in asbestos and industrial pollution control. Hall-Kimbrell was the third firm planning to move to the 296-acre research park.
Lawrence firefighters and the city had reached a tentative agreement after a nine-hour negotiation session attended by federal mediators. The mediators had been brought in after talks had reached an impasse on June 1.
Four Kansas University students were sentenced in Lawrence Municipal Court for misdemeanor criminal trespass during their participation in May’s anti-apartheid demonstrations at KU. They were fined $25 for each count, plus court costs. Two of the students were permitted to do five hours of community service work in lieu of the fine.
