100 years ago: Minors banned from driving in town

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 14, 1910: “A minor under 18 years of age can no longer drive a motor car, cycle or any vehicle propelled by steam, electricity, etc., on the streets of the city of Lawrence. So says an ordinance passed by the city council last night. In his objection to the ordinance, Councilman Hults said that as a rule boys are more careful in driving automobiles than men are and that he did not recall to mind a single accident of a minor…. There was a called meeting of the Athletic Board of the university yesterday afternoon, but the meeting did not materialize for the reason that no quorum could be obtained. It is supposed that the primary object of this meeting was the consideration of the salaries of the football coaches for the coming year. At a meeting held last week it was half way decided to raise Kennedy’s pay to $1400, but no official announcement was made of this action…. John Wright and two small sons of Boulder, Colo., passed through the city yesterday in an auto bound for New York City. They have been on the road about six weeks and are taking the time to get to the Atlantic coast, expecting to reach there about the first of August.”
