Selig visiting K.C. for All-Star announcement?

? The Kansas City Royals have confirmed that baseball commissioner Bud Selig will be in town Wednesday, perhaps to formally award the 2012 All-Star Game to Kansas City.

The Associated Press and other news outlets have reported that Kansas City will get the 2012 game as a reward for Jackson County residents passing a sales tax to pay for a $275 million renovation of Kauffman Stadium.

A Royals spokesman said Friday the commissioner would have a “major” announcement at the stadium, but declined to say what it was about. A call to Selig’s office was not immediately returned.

A divided three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that prosecutors may not present positive urine samples and other vital evidence that the government says shows that the slugger knowingly used steroids.

Izzo undecided about Cavs

Tom Izzo is still torn, trying to figure out if he should stay at Michigan State or leave to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Izzo wrote in a text message Friday morning — about 12 hours after he returned home from Cleveland — he has not made a decision.

Later that afternoon, Izzo also told his players that, according to a person at the meeting. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the meeting was to be confidential.

Atlanta — The Atlanta Hawks were poised to hire Larry Drew as their next head coach, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Friday.

Kurt Busch captures pole

Brooklyn, Mich. — Kurt Busch is on the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway.

Busch posted an average speed of 189.984 mph around the two-mile oval during Friday’s qualifying. Jamie McMurray will start second, and Jimmie Johnson will start third in the 400-mile race.

NHRA driver killed

Old Bridge, N.J. — A drag-racing driver ran through a containment area at the end of a track and died of head injuries after crashing his alcohol-fueled funny car at a “high rate of speed” during a qualifying round at the NHRA SuperNationals at a New Jersey raceway Friday, state police said.

Neal Parker, 58, of Millville, N.J., crashed at Raceway Park in Old Bridge, state police Sgt. Stephen Jones said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chicago — Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith asked for the name of a good dentist. Patrick Kane insisted he loved cabbies. And team captain Jonathan Toews hoisted the Stanley Cup to roars from a huge and appreciative crowd.

An estimated 2 million fans turned out Friday to cheer for the Blackhawks, holding a boisterous parade and rally to honor the National Hockey League champions who beat the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime Wednesday to win the series 4-2.

The Hawks, some clad in sandals and shorts, many with their caps turned backward, delighted their supporters with seemingly unrehearsed boyish charm.

Memphis, Tenn. — Englishman Lee Westwood birdied his final three holes and grabbed a share of a one-stroke lead Friday with Garrett Willis after the second round of the St. Jude Classic.

Westwood had a one-stroke lead after the first round, and the world’s No. 3-ranked player had to scramble a bit after two bogeys dropped him two strokes off the lead in this final tuneup for the U.S. Open.

Bjorn, Del Moral lead

Estoril, Portugal — Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Carlos Del Moral of Spain shared the lead at 12 under after the second round of the Estoril Open at Penha Longa on Friday.

U.S. Curtis Cup team falls behind

Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass. — The team comprised of Great Britain and Ireland got off to a strong start in its effort to snatch the Curtis Cup from the U.S. squad in the biennial event being held at the Essex County Club this weekend. After halving the three morning foursomes, the visitors won two of the three fourball matches in the afternoon to take a 3.5-2.5 lead over the Americans.

London — Rafael Nadal was dealt a setback in his Wimbledon preparations when he lost at the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament on Friday. The French Open champion fell, 7-6 (5), 6-4, to compatriot Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals.
