25 years ago: City annexes and rezones property

City commissioners annexed and rezoned 100 acres northeast of West 15th Street and Wakarusa Drive. Some development on the land was scheduled to begin in February 1986.

Commissioners also approved issuing $2 million in industrial revenue bonds to finance machinery and an expansion at the Lawrence Paper Company.

A photo titled “The Last Picture Show” showed the removal of the screen of the Sunset Drive-In Theatre. The theater, which had been located at 3305 W. Sixth Street, had shown its final movie in the fall of 1984 and was slated to be replaced by a commercial development.

A Chautauqua was planned to take place in Burcham Park during the annual Independence Days celebration on July 6 and 7. Governor Charles Robinson (as portrayed by Charles Higginson) was slated to speak.

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce planned to join forces with Kansas University to promote the sale of season football tickets, citing the economic benefits gained from out-of-town visitors.
