25 years ago: Local business may close doors

Attorneys for Culture Farms said that a recent cease-and-desist order would probably force the business to close its doors. The attorneys asked a district judge to block the order.

City officials were exploring several options for helping a Texas developer reduce the cost of its proposed riverfront shopping mall. If the city was able to help with the cost, the firm was planning to start construction in the winter of 1985-1986.

After remodeling to six Lawrence grade schools was finished, the school board and the Topeka construction firm that did the work were involved in a dispute over payment. At issue was whether the company should have been docked $14,000 for running 70 days over schedule.

The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN) was once again operating its Care-Van Mobile Market Project, by which donated fruits and vegetables were delivered to low-income, homebound people who were unable to cultivate a garden.
