UCLA slugs its way to 11th championship

? Andrea Harrison hit a grand slam, Megan Langenfeld homered for the third time in two games, and UCLA put on a record-setting offensive show to beat Arizona, 15-9, Tuesday night and win its 11th Women’s College World Series title.

Julie Burney and Samantha Camuso also homered for the Bruins (50-11) as a matchup of college softball’s two most successful programs turned into a home run derby.

Stacie Chambers went deep twice, and Lini Koria hit a solo shot for Arizona (52-14) as the teams combined to set a World Series record with seven long balls in the game. Ten of the 29 previous World Series didn’t have that many home runs during the entire event.

Wooden to be honored at graduation

Los Angeles — A colorful tribute to late UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is planned for Friday’s graduation ceremony.

The university said Tuesday that student-athletes and scholars representing the class will carry 99 blue-and-gold flags into the College of Letters and Science ceremony.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block will speak about Wooden’s legacy. About 4,500 students are expected to participate.

Wooden died Friday at age 99.

3 managers’ sons among draftees

New York — The sons of major-league managers Jim Leyland, Bruce Bochy and Ozzie Guillen were among the players selected during a long second day of the baseball draft.

All three managers’ teams drafted in the family. Leyland’s Detroit Tigers took his son, Patrick, in the eighth round. The Chicago White Sox took Guillen’s son, Ozney, a Florida high school outfielder, in the 22nd round.

San Francisco selected Bochy’s son, Brett, a right-handed reliever from Kansas University, in the 20th round. The younger Bochy was 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA and five saves before having Tommy John surgery in April and missing the rest of the season for the Jayhawks.

Hondurans get time off for Cup

Tegucigalpa, Honduras — The Honduran government has approved a work schedule that allows 200,000 public employees time off the job to watch the national team play in the World Cup in South Africa. The government has urged private enterprises to do the same.

Cavs confirm pursuit of Izzo

The Cleveland Cavaliers are considering Michigan State’s Tom Izzo to become their coach, the team’s new general manager said Tuesday. The team is trying to position itself to retain two-time MVP LeBron James, who can become a free agent on July 1.

“We have had conversations with his camp,” General Manager Chris Grant said at his introductory news conference, referring to Izzo. “We’ve talked to a number of candidates.”

Hornets introduce new coach

New Orleans — Monty Williams was introduced as the ninth head coach of the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday.

Williams, a former first-round draft choice out of Notre Dame by the New York Knicks, played nine NBA seasons. At 38, he is a head coach for the first time and currently the youngest in the NBA. He’ll inherit a squad that missed the playoffs for the first time in three years.

No. 2 Federer works for win

Halle, Germany — Roger Federer got off to a solid start with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday.

Playing his first match at No. 2 after Rafael Nadal returned to the No. 1 spot by winning the French Open, Federer was forced to work hard to earn the victory.
