Court hearings set in child-rape case

A Lawrence couple accused of committing multiple sex crimes against two girls were back in a Douglas County courtroom Tuesday morning.

The 32-year-old man and his 33-year-old wife were arrested last week, after the parents of two girls, who are now 8 and 10, reported the children were raped repeatedly during the past two years.

Police said the rapes occurred at a home in the north-central part of Lawrence and the victims were described as family friends of the suspects.

A Douglas County district judge scheduled the man’s preliminary hearing for Aug. 17. His wife’s hearing was rescheduled for June 29.

Lawrence police are still investigating whether there may be more victims in the case.

The Journal-World does not name suspects in sex crimes unless there is a conviction.
