40 years ago: Claims regarding possible gains from liquor taxes disputed

Previous claims that Kansas could realize an extra $20 million in tax revenues by legalizing liquor by the drink were called “utter nonsense” by Rev. Roy S. Hollomon, executive director of Kansans for No Saloons. Kansans were scheduled to vote on the issue in the upcoming November elections.

Mrs. Lucille E. Allison, the incumbent clerk of the Douglas County District Court, announced her candidacy for re-election. She was completing her ninth two-year term and was the seventh person (all Republicans) to announce candidacy for a county office.

TWA pilot Dale C. Hupe of Perry, Kansas, was pictured in his Falls Church, Virginia, hospital bed, smiling and shaking hands with TWA Capt. Billy Williams, chief international pilot of the airline. Hupe was recovering from a stomach wound incurred in the attempted hijack of his plane the previous week.
