Hot cities, cool drinks

For residents in warm-weather cities, summer is just another 90 degree day, and cold cocktails are an easy way to keep cool. Here are five hot cities and their cool drinks:

San Juan

• Hottest month: August, average 88 degrees.

• Signature drink: Pina Colada, created in 1954 by a Hilton Hotel bartender in San Juan, this drink calls for light rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream and pineapple garnish.

• Helpful tool: A large shaker to accommodate 10 ounces of liquid and ice.

Rio De Janeiro

• Hottest month: February, average 86 degrees.

• Signature drink: Caipirinha — Cachaca, sugar and lime. Preparation starts with muddling the sugar and lime. Add ice and cachaca, and serve with lime garnish.

• Helpful tool. A muddler to mash the sugar and lime.

New Orleans

• Hottest month: July/August, average 91 degrees

• Signature drink: Sazerac whisky, Peychaud’s bitters, sugar cube and absinthe. Garnished with lemon peel, served chilled in an old-fashioned glass. This classic dates to the mid-1800s.
