40 years ago: Summer classes begin at KU

Mt. Oread came back to life as summer classes began with record enrollments of 5,836. This represented a gain of 6.3 percent over the previous year’s enrollment.

A caved-in storm sewer in the north westbound at Sixth and Arkansas was due for repair. Traffic was expected to be diverted for a period of about three weeks.

A burglary was reported at Danforth Chapel on the KU campus. Someone had stolen an 18-inch cross which was valued between $175 and $200. The chapel at that time was never locked.

An advertisement for “Krazy Karl’s Early Bird Breakfasts” listed eggs, potatoes, choice of meat, toast and jelly for $1.19. For the slightly higher price of $1.49, early birds could enjoy steak and eggs, potatoes, toast and jelly. The location of the business was listed as 1811 W. Sixth Street.
