It’s unfortunate that Kansas University was without its top guns in the Big 12’s spring meetings in Kansas City.
Let’s hope that Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little made really important contacts with alumni in London. (Who’s minding the campus, anyway, with no chancellor and no provost in Lawrence?)
And let’s hope Athletics Director Lew “previous commitment” Perkins had a really understandable reason for basically deserting his post as the future of the athletics conference was argued.

If the Big 12 implodes because the good football teams join the PAC 10, honestly, there is not one thing that either Lew or the Chancellor can do about it. Likewise there is absolutely nothing that Lew or the Chancellor can do about MU possibly bolting for the Big 10 and then making it more likely the football teams will fly West.
Face it KU fans, your 12K per day man Lew cannot do a damn thing about the future of the Big 12. All those millions you are paying him do not add up to didley squat when it comes to what may be the most important event for KU Athletics for the last fifty and next fifty years.
It is not really a matter of if, but rather, when the Big 12 will fold.

The London junket and the 'previous commitment' are both inexcusable reasons for being absent at such a critical juncture. KU should have had appropriate representation at the Big XII meetings That the chancellor left the country at this particular time certainly calls into question her priorities. That she took a London junket so soon after taking the reins of the university calls into question her judgment. At first blush it would appear that perhaps she has the same mindset as Perkins - to get every dollar and perk possible out of the university.

Oh my what will the University do? How can the Chancellor communicate from London when it takes weeks for a dispatch to arrive by steamship? If only the transatlantic telegraph line was complete!
And Lew not being at the meetings! Perhaps Mr. Marconi's remarkable wireless device could have helped people who are not in the same room as him hear his voice, and he in turn hear theirs!
We're in the 21st century here, guys. It isn't like they're relying on the Pony Express to communicate. And don't assume that just because someone isn't there at a meeting that they're not working the problem. Frankly, I think it is more likely that private conversations rather than meetings with all 12 schools are what will be more important in the end.

Fortunately your perception is just that - perception, shaded by a long-standing hatred of Lew Perkins. It is also a perception that has little basis in reality.

It is my position that decisions are best made using facts, of which you offer few.

I'm not talking about the equipment - that'll be decided by the ethics commission. I'm talking about your various claims about Lew being cut out of meetings, or your claim about the Europe trip being some last-minute thing, or your accusing Bill Self of improprieties. You have no basis for any of that and you know it.

It's going to be hard to claim she takes the ethics questions seriously, when she wouldn't even order an investigation until the situation became public.
More importantly, she failed to form an investigative committee composed of professionals independent from KU. Typical KU administration move though, Gray-Little-Accomplished is the perfect replacement for Do-Nothing-Hemenway because she thinks and acts just like him.

Good lord, it's just sports. Bid deal. God forbid she was taking care of academic business, like arranging for good exchange programs or research programs. That's just menial compared to sports? People's lives are getting pretty out of kilter. Sports = gladiators. More sign of the American decline.

Chancellor Gray can see through the muckedy mucks in this town. She made a trip to England and as someone else posted, it's just sports. She has bigger fish to fry than Lew Perkins and his program. She made the appearance with Lew at the beginning and with that said, that is all she needs to do. What you folks want her to do? Hold Lew's "thing" while he goes to the toilet? You want the Chancellor to email everyone in town of what she is doing.
She didn't get to where she is at in life pandering ot a bunch of pyschos like she is encountering in Lawrence. She is taking care of business and big deal, she takes a trip.
Maybe it is time that some at the Journal World take a trip instead of writing the tripe that is in the editorial, as it is only to get some responses from the public and then generate some more stories about a bunch of jocks and a bully director.
Look, if the Chancellor leaves tomorrow, Lawrence is still PETTY and mundane.
As someone else pointed out, communication is not done with Pony Express or western union telegraph anymore. What would have been gained if Chancellor Gray had sat at the meetings in Kansas City listening to a bunch of old men trying to impress each other.
What?

UM - She's in London raising much needed money for ACADEMICS - the University is in dire need of funds for crumbling buildings, scholarships, teaching positions, research, etc. This is a University folks, not a sports franchise!

Nobody can make any difference so what's the deal?
Lew has put the Chancellor in a mess. Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little cannot possibly answer any question regarding this federal investigation. It looks like this alleged crime was initiated by some Lawrence builders.
What could anyone expect Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little to say? She has no history with any of the individuals involved off or on campus. Give her a break!
What has never surfaced is why is the BIG 12 splitting up? What brought this on?
Why has KU not been invited anywhere? What's up with that?

Lol merrill you have not been paying attention. Anyway, the Big 12 is going to implode because the schools with large TV markets are coalescing to double their TV revenue and schools with wimpy TV markets (KU, KSU for example) are getting left at the altar. That answers both your questions.
