25 years ago: City considering southern Lawrence bypass

Plans for an industrial park and a southern bypass for Lawrence traffic were being discussed in closed meetings by county commissioners. It was unclear whether commissioners were talking about specific sites or simply whether to proceed with further discussions.

City officials met with representatives from Two Crowns Inc., the Texas firm requesting city assistance in building a mall along the riverfront. Meanwhile, Town Center Venture Corporation was still pursuing a project to develop a $41 million, 300,000-square-foot mall project in the 600 block of downtown.

Melissa Brady, rising senior at Lawrence High School, won first place in the Kansas History contest sponsored by the Douglas County Historical Society. The subject of her paper, William Wiedemann, lived in the two-story Vermont Street home where Melissa and her family currently lived.
