Killeen, Texas quarterback Michael Cummings wasted little time becoming the latest player in the Class of 2011 to orally commit to the Kansas University football program.

Cummings, in town with his father for an official visit, told Rivals.com Friday evening that he had committed to KU.

Cummings has thrown for more than 4,000 yards and rushed for 1,800 more during the last two seasons at Killeen High. In 2009, he was named the offensive player of the year in his district.

Cummings becomes the latest in a long line of quarterbacks to consider himself lucky to learn under the teaching of KU coach Turner Gill and offensive coordinator Chuck Long, both star quarterbacks during their playing days.

“Playing for them will be the best of worlds,” Cummings told Rivals. “They were both great quarterbacks. Coach Gill was a mobile quarterback and coach Long was more of a pocket-passer. So they will be great coaches that can help me a lot.”

Cummings, 6-foot, 196 pounds, also received offers from Louisiana Tech and Tulsa. Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU and UTEP also showed serious interest.

Cummings joins running back Dreamius Smith (Wichita Heights), linebacker Jake Love (Tonkawa, Okla.) and cornerback Chris Robinson (Lake Mary, Fla.) on KU’s commitment list for 2011.
