Sponge painting can meld colors to unify a room

Sponge painting is a quick and easy way to add depth and interest to any room in your home. It is also a great way to avoid having to pick just the right color for that interior painting project you have been meaning to tackle.

Step 1: Choose a base coat color. This color can be light or dark, and the finish can be satin or semi-gloss. The easiest choice is, of course, to use the current color of your walls as the base coat.

Step 2: Choose a top coat color. If you are feeling very creative, you can sponge on more than one color. The last color you sponge on will be the more prominent color once you have finished.

Step 3: After the walls have been properly prepared for painting, apply a single coat of the base color you have chosen. Be sure to paint the corners and around the trim.

Step 4: After the base coat is dry, mix a portion of your second color with an equal amount of latex glaze or Flotrol. Adding additional glaze will create a more translucent top coat color. Once mixed, the top coat paint should be a milklike consistency.

Step 5: Cut a large natural sea sponge into fist-size pieces. Soak the sponges in water and wring out completely.

Step 6: Practice your sponging technique on a piece of cardboard. Dip the damp sponge into the top coat color, but do not saturate the sponge. Lightly press the sponge to the surface, twisting your wrist as you lift it off. If you apply too much paint in one spot, simply sponge off the excess paint.

Step 7: Once you have perfected your technique, start in one corner of the wall and work across, rinsing the sponge in water as needed. Step back and inspect your work on a regular basis to assure the pattern appears uniform across the wall surface.

Step 8: Allow the top coat to dry completely and sponge on any additional colors, using the same technique as before.
