40 years ago: Airplane piloted by Perry man hijacked over Arizona

Capt. Dale C. Hupe, whose hometown was listed as Perry, Kan., was the pilot of a TWA jetliner that was hijacked over Arizona by a man demanding $100 million. Hupe suffered a bullet wound to his stomach when he and the co-pilot, Donald Salmonson of Overland Park, captured the hijacker in a tense cockpit gun battle. Hupe was reported as recovering after surgery in Washington, D.C.

State Senator and rural Lawrence farmer Reynolds Shultz began his campaign for the Republican nomination for state lieutenant governor. In his announcement speech, Shultz criticized the Docking administration on industrial development and the “current disunity” in the state of Kansas.

The city of Lawrence was expected to benefit by a new method for using the federal census, rather than county agricultural censuses, in determining state revenue rebates.

After six days of steady rain, the sun rose over Lawrence, blue skies prevailed and rivers levels began falling to normal.
