25 years ago: Bond issue for street improvements approved

City commissioners approved a bond issue for major street repairs and traffic light improvements. The projects were expected to cost more than $524,000. Traffic signals were to be added or improved at 19th and Massachusetts, 15th and Iowa, 11th and Kentucky, 11th and Tennessee, and 23rd and Haskell.

Land acquisition for capital improvements planning was on the agenda of a closed meeting scheduled for Douglas County commissioners. Possibilities included road improvements – such as constructing a “southern loop” around the city of Lawrence – or setting up an industrial park.

Two armed robberies occurred in one night in Lawrence, one at a Taco John’s on Sixth Street and the other at the Kwik Shop at 856 Mississippi. The robberies were apparently unconnected.

A Topeka hearing examiner was expected to reach a decision by the end of the week concerning the Culture Farms firm’s nationwide culture-growing business. The firm was under investigation for possibly selling unregistered securities.
