40 years ago: Hotel Eldridge preparing to close

Mike Getto, manager of the historic 115-year-old Hotel Eldridge, announced that phase-out operations for the five-story, 90-room hotel were underway. The hotel was scheduled to close on July 1, 1970. Owners of the hotel were Mrs. W. G. Hutson and Mrs. M. J. Getto. Mrs. Hutson had resided at the hotel for many years and Mrs. Getto had been born there. “As of now, it looks like the Eldridge never again will be used as a hotel,” Mr. Getto said, citing financial difficulties in his decision to close.

The Ramada Inn at Sixth and Iowa reported a theft of $436.77 cash, which had been taken from an overnight storage area of the kitchen. Other locations where money had previously been kept had also been ransacked.

Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Wolfe of West 31st Street found an unusual creature in their driveway. Staff from KU’s Museum of Natural History identified the creature as the largest Blood Sucking Leech most of them had ever seen. The leech could stretch itself to ten inches in length.
