25 years ago: Missing storm sirens cause for concern
When a funnel cloud was spotted aloft near Baldwin during a recent storm, sirens were activated in Eudora and Baldwin. However, residents of both towns later said that no sirens sounded. The county Emergency Preparedness Center planned to conduct tests to determine why the sirens failed to operate.
A recent decision by a Texas firm to take over the planning of the Lawrence Riverfront Mall had reawakened interest in local shopping malls. Information was “sketchy” on possible development of 61 acres on Iowa Street south of Armstrong Road.
Local windsurfing enthusiasts were praising Clinton Lake as being an excellent place to practice their sport. The wind conditions were particularly good in the spring and the fall, according to experienced windsurfers.
Anita Siler, a counselor at Independence Inc., recounted the progress made in Lawrence over the previous ten years regarding awareness of rights of persons with disabilities.
