40 years ago: KU awards advanced degrees

Kansas University hosted the awarding of advanced degrees to nearly 500 students. The ceremony, usually held in Memorial Stadium, was moved to Allen Fieldhouse as rainy weather moved into the area.

The Douglas County Commission, acting as the welfare board, approved a budget calling for expenditures of $1.89 million, a rise of $340,000 from the previous year. The tax levy would be almost three-quarters of a mill higher than the year before. Welfare was specifically exempt from the new tax lid law which had been enacted by the Kansas Legislature in the spring of 1970.

At a Rotary Club lunch in Pittsburg, Hank Parkinson estimated that Kansas could net $20 million annually in additional tax revenue if liquor by the drink were legalized. Parkinson was the campaign coordinator for Kansans for Modern Alcoholic Beverage Control.
