Phoenix — The Arizona Diamondbacks traded away an All-Star pitcher for the second time in a week, sending right-hander Edwin Jackson to the Chicago White Sox on Friday for rookie Daniel Hudson and prospect David Holmberg.

Arizona shipped three-time All-Star Dan Haren to the Los Angeles Angels for left-hander Joe Saunders and three other players last week. The last-place Diamondbacks continued their rebuilding project by moving Jackson, an All-Star in 2009 who tossed the second no-hitter in franchise history June 25 against Tampa Bay.

Arizona’s purge gives Chicago a solid addition to its rotation, which is missing injured right-hander Jake Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner. The White Sox began the day with a 11/2-game lead in the AL Central over Minnesota.

Jackson was 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA in 21 starts for the Diamondbacks this year, coming off an All-Star season in which he went 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 33 starts covering 214 innings for Detroit.

Cubs reinstate pitcher Zambrano

Denver — Chicago Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano was activated from the restricted list Friday, and the right-hander is ready to pitch after making amends with his teammates.

“It feels good to be back,” he said. “I had to come in and apologize to the team.”

Zambrano was suspended June 26, a day after he got into a verbal altercation with teammate Derrek Lee.

To make room for Zambrano on the 40-man roster, the Cubs granted reliever Bob Howry his unconditional release.

Former Dodgers pitcher dies

Los Angeles — Billy Loes, who pitched on three pennant-winning Brooklyn Dodgers teams in the 1950s and was an AL All-Star in 1957, has died. He was 80.

Loes died July 15 at a hospice in Tucson, Ariz., his wife Irene confirmed Friday from her home in Chapel Hill, N.C. He had diabetes for several years and had open-heart surgery a few years ago, she said.

Ashburn, Va. — The Washington Redskins signed No. 4 overall pick and former Oklahoma offensive tackle Trent Williams to a six-year, $60 million contract that includes $36.75 million in guaranteed money on Friday.

Vikings ink draft pick Gerhart

Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings signed second-round draft pick Toby Gerhart to a four-year deal Friday, putting all eight of the team’s draft picks under contract before the start of training camp.

Westminster, Md. — Baltimore Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth will miss the 2010 season because of a knee injury, further weakening a secondary already depleted by injuries.

Haynesworth fails test again

Ashburn, Va. — Early Friday morning, the cones were lined up 25 yards apart on the field for Albert Haynesworth’s conditioning test. He needed to complete the first part in 70 seconds or less to have a chance to pass.

He clocked 71.

Another failed effort. Once again, the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle was not allowed to participate in practice at Washington Redskins training camp.

Rams sign No. 1 pick Bradford

St. Louis — No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford agreed to a six-year, $78 million contract with the St. Louis Rams on Friday night, with $50 million in guaranteed money.

The Rams and the former Oklahoma quarterback concluded negotiations in time for the first full-squad workout set for today. The guaranteed money is the highest ever in the NFL.

Bradford is the centerpiece of a rebuilding effort for the Rams, who were 1-15 last year in the first season under coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Dallas WR Bryant out 4-6 weeks

San Antonio — Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant could miss the rest of training camp after the first-round draft pick suffered a high right ankle sprain near the end of practice Friday. The team said he will be out four to six weeks. Bryant became entangled with cornerback Orlando Scandrick while trying to catch a pass that was thrown behind him on the next-to-last play of the day.

New York — Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum will be together at least five more years, hoping to deliver the New York Jets a Super Bowl. The Jets signed the bold and brash Ryan to a two-year contract extension Friday and gave the wheeling-and-dealing Tannenbaum a five-year extension.

Aide testifies in Pitino case

Louisville, Ky. — Rick Pitino never said a woman who claimed the Louisville basketball coach got her pregnant after a one-night stand had to get an abortion but did advise she “go out of town” to get medical care, his longtime aide told a jury Friday.

The aide, Tim Sypher, was testifying against the woman, his ex-wife Karen Cunagin Sypher. He testified about helping her get an abortion at her extortion trial. The two divorced after she was indicted last year on charges of demanding cash and gifts worth millions from Pitino to keep secret their 2003 tryst on a restaurant table.

Huggins’ tumble blamed on meds

Morgantown, W.Va. — West Virginia University says basketball coach Bob Huggins’ rib-breaking fall occurred because medication taken on an empty stomach left him lightheaded.

President James Clements and athletic director Oliver Luck told the Charleston Daily Mail that Huggins stood too quickly, tripped and fell into a table in his Las Vegas hotel room last week.
