KDOT to discuss U.S. 56 bridges

The Kansas Department of Transportation will hold an open house in Baldwin City to discuss replacement of three bridges.

The meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Baldwin Elementary School’s intermediate center gym, 100 Bullpup Drive.

The bridges are on a 2.5-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 56 west of Baldwin City. To complete the bridge replacement project within one construction season, that portion of U.S. 56 will be closed to through traffic.

KDOT is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in 2013.

The bridges, which span Tauy Creek outlets, were built in the late 1920s and need to be replaced because of age and deterioration.
