40 years ago: Federal group studying campus unrest expected

A study group made up of members of the President’s Commission on Campus Unrest was expected to arrive in Lawrence in the coming week. Their intent was to gather information on recent violent events in Lawrence and to make recommendations for the future.

A tiny rainshower had given Lawrence about .43 inch of rain overnight, but it was not expected to make much of a dent in the ongoing drought. An amount of at least 1.5 inches of steady rain, with more rain following, was deemed necessary to break the drought, according to local farm experts.

Douglas County Sheriff Rex Johnson was notified by Florida law enforcement when a Baldwin man and a Perry man were among a group of eight arrested at a Jacksonville, Fla., airport when they landed in a plane carrying 500 pounds of marijuana. The group, which also included three other Kansans, had arrived in a plane rented from a Wichita firm.
