Franklin County authorities recovered a woman’s body from the Marais des Cygnes River Monday morning after someone reported a woman was in the river just east of the Main Street Bridge in Ottawa.

Police have linked the body found in the river with a simultaneous report of a woman missing from her Ottawa home, according to a statement from Dennis Butler, Ottawa’s chief of police.

“Positive identification is pending, but police are no longer searching for the woman reported missing from South Cedar Street,” Butler said.

Upon a report of a woman in the river, multiple law enforcement and fire and rescue agencies were called at 8 a.m. to the bridge that leads into downtown Ottawa.

Butler said a water and ground search ensued. At 9:30 a.m. recovery teams found the body downstream from the bridge.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death. Police notified family members, who reported the woman missing, of the recovery, Butler said.

As of 1:30 p.m., authorities had not released the woman’s name, but an emergency dispatcher said she was reported to be in her 50s or 60s.

Personnel from several agencies were involved in the effort, including Ottawa police, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Emergency Medical Services, the Lincoln-Ottawa-Harrison fire district, the Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
