Lawrence man arrested after incident outside bar

July 26, 2010, 5:05 a.m. Updated July 26, 2010, 5:54 p.m.

Prosecutors also charged a 40-year-old Lawrence man with two counts of misdemeanor battery after an incident early Monday outside a Lawrence bar.

Police and prosectuors accuse Abass Oseni of having physical contact with a 23-year-old Lawrence woman in a “rude, insulting, or angry manner.”

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, officers were dispatched to the parking lot outside Wayne and Larry's, 933 Iowa St., about 1:47 a.m. Bordman said witnesses outside the establishment said they had seen Oseni touch the woman inappropriately as he was leaving.

The woman's boyfriend, a 33-year-old Lawrence man, took offense to the situation and came to the defense of the woman. Upon getting involved, the suspect battered the man, Bordman said. Bordman said the incident set off a melee of sorts.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was attempting to flee the area in his vehicle. Police were able to stop him in the 1200 block of Iowa Street. The officers made contact with the suspect and took him into custody without incident.

The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail about 2 a.m. on charges of battery and sexual battery.

No one was seriously injured during the incident.

"...set off a melee of sorts."

How many sorts of melees are there? If it wasn't a proper melee, perhaps it was more of a fracas or a donnybrook?

Nah, I think it might have been a brannigan.

Bit of a Tiff, or more of a squabble?

I imagine it was more of a kerfuffle!

Can anyone come up with a viable reason as to why we still need to keep bars open until after Midnight Sunday through Thursday, aside from the money the bar owners make?

OldEnuf2BYurDad 7 years ago

We don't "need" bars at all, so really, the purpose of having the bars open at any time is for money.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 7 years ago

When this guy sobers up he's gonna realize that the "feel" he got off her ain't worth being a registered sex offender.

meggers 7 years ago

Actually, that is incorrecct. Any sexual assault counts.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 7 years ago

Any sexual assault. It's not just for pedophiles.

@Kernal, there are plenty of people that don't work a neat and tidy 9-5 job. They might work a 2nd shift job, get off at 11 or 11:30 and would like to stop and have a drink before heading home. If you close down the bars at midnight that means last call is at 11:30 (or earlier) basically eliminating the possibility for someone that has just worked an 8 hour (or longer) shift from stopping and having a nice cold one before heading home.

kernal 7 years ago

So what you're saying, people need to be able to stop off a a bar 24/7. Banging the gong!

thomgreen 7 years ago

You asked for a viable reason why a bar should be open past midnight., not 24/7.

Casey_Jones 7 years ago

Of course they don't need to. In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of things people have that they don't need. If you could make money being available for people who want to drink at 9am, why not? If someone's drinking that early they should probably take a serious look at their drinking habits, but who are you to say when an appropriate time to drink is?

Good point. We don't need the internet, it needs us. When is it appropriate to log off?

you are a sad little man who apparently has never experienced the great night life that Lawrence has to offer. Many students pay their way through school by bartending or waitressing at bars. A better fix to the problem of grabby guys is chivalry, I personally have beat or thrown out many a grab ass. Guys stand up for women dont stand by and let these scum think they can get away with it.

This is the trouble with people, never holding an individual responsible always some other reason people are stupid. Let's close the bars, outlaw alcohol, instate a curfew and while we're at it lets call in the national guard.

Nobody, that was my thought too! "some sort of a Melee?" vs "a melee."
what is the police officer trying to communicate with the implied uncertainty? was there or was there not a melee?
it couldn't have been a very good melee because it ended so quickly, no one involved went to the hospital.
maybe it was a melee, but it was only a third-degree melee?

good for the woman's boyfriend! just because random jerk thinks she's a bowlingball doesn't mean you have to put up with it!

not much trouble associated with Wayne and Larry's.

If there's going to be a melee, I'll go home & get my buckler and morning star.

I wonder if that is what that country singer was talking about when he was singing I woke up with a pig in a blanket. This guy wakes up with more than he bargained for.

Possibly a brouhaha? Good description, Kontum72, of what this dude is going through..and all for the want of a nail, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin.

CWGOKU- Why on earth would we need to see a picture of the 23 year old woman involved? Would her being super hot make this action ok? If she was unattractive would you say that she should be glad for the attention? The incident is unfortunate, no matter what.

I only clicked to see if the unfortunate confused struggle was at a bar near me and I was in danger whilst I peacefully slept last night, and I get freakin' Comedy Central.

Sounds like more of a brouhaha than a melee - a bunch of shenanigans.....

If somebody had called in the Ostrogoths, it'd still be a rumble down on Iowa St.

I don't drink and think people should be smart enough not to drink, most can't handle it, it handles them. Given that, I have no problem with 24/7, bars, restaurants, groceries, shoe stores being open. No magic curfew keeps people from being fools and villains. If a barkeep wants to say open and if a patron wants to buy, their business.

bearded_gnome 7 years ago

not a melee.

certainly it was a 'kerfuffle!'

hey ljworld, how 'bout a followup article on the idjiot nymrod who started it with his slimey hands. maybe an ljworld award-winning journo-list goes with the video running to his home?
could be fun.
or, is Mr. Handy another transient/homeless/bum lifestyler?
