Lawrence man arrested after incident outside bar

Prosecutors also charged a 40-year-old Lawrence man with two counts of misdemeanor battery after an incident early Monday outside a Lawrence bar.

Police and prosectuors accuse Abass Oseni of having physical contact with a 23-year-old Lawrence woman in a “rude, insulting, or angry manner.”

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, officers were dispatched to the parking lot outside Wayne and Larry’s, 933 Iowa St., about 1:47 a.m. Bordman said witnesses outside the establishment said they had seen Oseni touch the woman inappropriately as he was leaving.

The woman’s boyfriend, a 33-year-old Lawrence man, took offense to the situation and came to the defense of the woman. Upon getting involved, the suspect battered the man, Bordman said. Bordman said the incident set off a melee of sorts.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was attempting to flee the area in his vehicle. Police were able to stop him in the 1200 block of Iowa Street. The officers made contact with the suspect and took him into custody without incident.

The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail about 2 a.m. on charges of battery and sexual battery.

No one was seriously injured during the incident.
