40 years ago: Theft of $6,000 cash reported

Gov. Robert Docking expressed strong concern about recent violent events in Lawrence and about a report that an assistant to the dean of men at Kansas University had bought 27 boxes of assorted ammunition in Topeka and helped take it to Afro House, which was located at 946 1/2 Rhode Island.

Statements from over 60 witnesses in the fatal Nick Rice shooting had been collected and turned over to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant County Attorney Mike Elwell said that no conclusive evidence had yet been presented as to the source of the bullets that killed Rice and injured another student.

A Lawrence resident reported a theft of $6,000 in cash which had been donated as a “liberation fund.” It was not clear what the fund’s exact use would have been. The resident reported that he had taken the money to the home of a Eudora friend for safekeeping. A visitor to the Eudora home had reportedly found the money hidden there and had fled with it, brandishing a gun and saying “I’ve got your bread and I’m splitting.”
