25 years ago: Expansion to Deerfield School considered
An estimated $1 million expansion to Deerfield School was under discussion. Lawrence school officials were interviewing architects and hoped to make their choice by August. The addition was part of a long-range plan to reorganize the school district and would make Deerfield a “model” school, as defined by the district’s boundary and enrollment committee. According to that definition, a “model” school would include full-time librarians, counselors, nurse-educators and developmental first grade.
The owner of the “Jesus Laundromat,” 1847 Louisiana, was presenting a request to city commissioners to be allowed to open a sales counter with a small menu of sandwiches, snacks and soft drinks. About 300 to 500 high school students were already visiting the laundry daily to use the vending machines.
The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission was considering a request for two halfway houses for women recovering from alcohol and substance abuse.
