Topeka ? The state highway department has designated its first “historic byway,” a 102-mile stretch in western Kansas that features unique rock formations and Indian ruins.

The “Western Vistas Historic Byway” starts in Scott City on U.S. Highway 83, passes through Scott Lake State Park on K-95, then north to Oakley and west to U.S. 40 in Sharon Springs.

Along the way are the El Quartelejo Pueblo ruins, Monument Rocks and other historic sites, museums, scenery and recreational activities.

“The state designation will create greater awareness of the historical significance and scenic beauty of this area for visitors and spur interest in the communities along the route,” said Scott Shields, Kansas State Byways Coordinator.

The designation by the Kansas Department of Transportation will also result in the placement of markers along the byway. Kansas has designated 9 scenic byways, but this is the first historic one.
